HARD LANDING
Alex Shanahan loves the airline business. At 34 years old, she has no husband, no children, no long-term relationships—not even a dog. She has her job, which over her career has taken her from airport to airport and city to city. She lives among boxes she no longer bothers to unpack and pursues the assignments no one else will take, the ones she considers to be the best opportunities. Taking charge of the Boston operation after Ellen Shepard’s suicide is the perfect challenge for Alex. From the moment she sets foot at Logan, Alex is pulled into the intrigue of her predecessor’s death. She is welcomed by an obscene depiction of Ellen’s dead body twisting at the end of a rope. It’s a greeting from some of her new employees, a warning that secrets can kill, and a threat that once she knows them it will already be too late. But Alex wants to know the truth. She follows a trail of corruption and betrayal from the ramp at Logan to the airline’s executive suites. What she uncovers could bring down the airline and destroy the lives and careers of everyone involved. It could also cost Alex her life.

"Hard Landing by
Lynne Heitman begins with the fatal crash of a commuter flight from Boston's Logan Airport to Baltimore that was carrying 21 passengers and crew. Heitman was a general manager of American Airlines' Boston operation, and she gives us an insider's view of how airlines deal with routine (and not so routine) problems in customer relations, labor, and management. Alex Shanahan has just arrived to be general manager for Majestic Airlines, her predecessor apparently having committed suicide, and Heitman leads Alex a lively dance while avoiding the obvious
clichés. This is a debut novel, but I like it because it is also a good novel."
"Lynne Heitman has melded the maze of today's airline industry with an intriguing
murder mystery. HARD LANDING goes
down easy, and will keep you
guessing
- and flipping pages - 'till three a.m."
"There’s
something mysterious happening at Boston’s Logan International Airport, and
the novel’s heroine, Alex Shanahan, the new manager of the fictitious Majestic
Airlines, is thrust into the middle of it. Fasten your seat belt — this story,
written by an airline industry insider, is exciting from start to finish."
"HARD
LANDING combines a highly likable heroine with a cleverly
twisting plot ...an edge-of-your-seat thriller that sweeps you up and
carries you along for the ride!"
"A
confession: I love to have an insider from a field I THOUGHT I understood show
me how I was wrong. Lynne Heitman's debut mystery, HARD LANDING, delves beneath
the ticket counters and departure gates to expose how both a major airline and a
major airport really work. The Boston settings are dead-on, and Alexandra
Shanahan is credibly tough and genuinely sensitive
at
all the right times. Highly recommended."
